01 – How to install Ubuntu Server on Oracle VirtualBox in 20 minutes

In this tutorial I will show you how to install Ubuntu Server on Oracle VirtualBox. It’s a good point to create any debian based server. Ubuntu server is very user friendly and contains rich application and tools repository. In my opinion is the best OS to learn linux for any user (from begginers to pro).

Create virtual machine in Oracle VirtualBox


Create virtual machine

Download, install and run Oracle VirtualBox, then click new to create virtual machine. Choose name, RAM size and create dynamically allocated virtual hard drive.

Additional configuration

Let’s add more CPUs, shared folder and a network card bridged to the host card. In this configuration you will be able to access to the machine like any other connected to your router and share the directory with the host machine.

Installation process

Download Ubuntu Server ISO image, and mount it in your virtual machine.

Click run and go through very simple installation process.

User and password used i this tutorial:  tutorial/welcome1

SSH remote connection

It’s very helpful to configure ssh server and remote connection to the virtual machine.

Install openssh-server

Run virtual machine and login as tutorial/welcome1

Install openssh-server and check ip address.

sudo apt-get install openssh-server

Windows: How to connect to the remote machine via SSH

Download and run putty. Enter the configuration and click “Open”.

Linux: How to connect to the remote machine via SSH

Just run command


In my case:

ssh tutorial@

Install updates

To Install package updates just run:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
